REVIEW: Ufych Sormeer - Anthem To The Glory Of The Great Octagon Ancestral Craft, 2001
6.5/10
Ufych Sormeer - Anthem To The Glory Of The Great Octagon - cover art Ufych Sormeer is a black metal band that was formed around Lille in France in 1997 by three musicians who had previously been playing together in different thrash/death metal bands. After several line-up changes they went into the studio to record their first album which was released in October 2001 by the French label Ancestral Craft Productions. "Anthem To The Glory Of The Great Octagon" is the first chapter of a medieval saga, very strongly influenced by Michael Moorcock's Elric cycle. I would have preferred to see shorter song titles for this album but I must admit that this is a band with an interesting concept and sound. Their music is very similar to Bal-Sagoth, a band that they will probably find themselves being compared to all the time, with epic, bombastic and symphonic black metal. There is a lot of keyboards and spoken words on this album but this only makes the music more dynamic and varied which is very important today when there are so many bands around. They are still not fully developed but it will be very interesting to see what they can achieve in the future. Their next chapter of their own epic saga will be recorded in the upcoming year (2002) and they have promised more bombastic songs, more creativity and more technical music.
