REVIEW: Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne Til Ulven I Manden Head Not Found, 1996
9.5/10
Ulver - Nattens Madrigal - Aatte Hymne Til Ulven I Manden - cover art Before the purchase of this CD I had read some bad reviews in zines and metal press in general. However, that was not enough to stop my interest for these Norwegians forest music. After the first listen I realised that I was before a great album, nevermind what the "wise people" of the metal press said. “The Madrigal of Night: eight hymns to the wolf in man” is a concept album that links the human being with the wolf and develops this bond artistically. This concept isn´t only reflected in the lyrics but also in the music. The environment isn´t what one would call the best: the sound of this album is not what we would say "perfect". It´s ugly and dirty as hell, imbalanced, even noisy at times, but the music portrayed is so overwhelming that the rotten sound embraces the fast, raw songs contained, in a sort of bewildered betrothal that is simply unique. Melodies are simple but very effective and strongly emotional, mostly in a fast pace. And lyrics are written in ancient Danish, dealing about wolves and night, and the sentiments related.

All in all this is a very underestimated album that captures perfectly the essence of harsh and frozen black metal; simple, repetitive, deeply cold in its minimalistic expression, away from any pretentiousness, straight to the ear, but reflective in the end. Some similarities could be drawn from Darkthrone´s “Transylvanian Hunger. When listening to this album, one could have in mind the picture of a wolfpack running through the woods at night, desperately chasing the prey, melting their silhouettes with the trees, clad in the dark cloak of the night. The marriage of beast and nature portrayed by the most aggressive and cruelly unleashed black metal. The music itself elevates over the rest: namely production, song structures, technical skills, things that become just ornaments for Ulver. No ridiculous keyboards nor sweety voices, this is music from the Norwegian wrath of nature itself. Pure and ultra-raw black metal for the chosen ones.
