REVIEW: Underlord - Rise Of The Ancient Kings Rage Of Achilles, 2002
7/10
Underlord - Rise Of The Ancient Kings - cover art In combining Venom-like songs with that raw, distant production, fellow Canadians Underlord seem to have accomplished what they set out to do: bring back the old-school! Though it took a couple of minutes, I got into these 10 songs for what they are. The Venom vibe is strong in "Apocryphal Murmurs", and in the riffing of "Cycle Of Epochs", a song I found myself strangely addicted to. That's not something that happens often anymore, but such is the nature of Celtic Frost, Hellhammer and now these 3 Canucks: the hook is there! I also pick up a lot of "Initium"-era Samhain in the music here; could be the distorted bass, could be the riffs like in the chorus of "At Satan's Behest", or it could be the dreadful feelings of the slower moments like in "The Blooded Helm". I suppose that some of the content is part of the Canadian musical culture, seeing as we spawned seminal acts like Razor, Sacrifice, Disciples Of Power and Slaughter. A little speed metal, a little horror punk and a little black metal add up to a pretty cool listen, and will surely see Underlord fans in many different music scenes. FAVORITE TRACKS: "Cycle Of Epochs", "The Warlock", "Reign Of The Elders".
