Unearth return to slaughter the masses with their 4th opus, The March. The fact that I couldn’t be happier with it is quite a testament indeed, especially when you consider the fact that I absolutely abhor metalcore (I blame Hatebreed for this fake metal fad). Unearth have always been an exception for me, I must admit, as the energy and musicianship were always of top quality; I just never got that bad, plasticky feeling in my mouth that most mall-metal exudes.
The March is very much in the mold of other Unearth albums, and it’s apparent they’re really in their groove for these songs. Grave of Opportunity, my personal favorite, is an epic and sobering crescendo about mortality and time, while songs like The Chosen and My Will Be Done convey the power of personal choice and struggle that has always been a hallmark of Unearth.
Despite my near-unanimous praise, it did sound like the drummer got bored sometimes, reverting to styles that really could be from the first Unearth album. Then again, I think it might just be me, spoiled by the new All Shall Perish album, which I must regretfully recommend a hair more to anyone in the market for a good, against-the-flow metalcore album.
I’m very happy with the way Unearth have never compromised their sound, and The March yields impressive results; a true refinement, to say the least. I look forward to hearing future swaths of destruction from this 5-piece powerhouse, and until then this will be on heavy rotation on my playlist.
