REVIEW: Unholy Matrimony - Misologie Melancholia Records, 2003
8/10
Unholy Matrimony - Misologie - cover art This album by French one-man-band Unholy Matrimony has supposed quite a nice surprise for me. To be honest, I had never heard of this musical project before I received this promo, and I can state that we are facing a quite brave and daring Black Metal creation. First of all I would like to warn the readers that this is not a standard black metal band, but the other way round. Here we find influences from Black Metal, but mixed with industrial elements. The first thing that comes to your mind when you press the play button is the drums. They are hyper-fast but nothing to do with the usual black metal blast beat. In this case the drum sound, programmed by computer gives a different touch, with the double bass at an inhuman speed and sounding louder than the snare. Furthermore, they are quite loud in the final mix and as their sound is crystal clear, something this gives the album a touch of artificiality or lack of feelings (something done voluntarily and which creates a great impression). Concerning the melodic parts, these are performed efficiently by the synthesizers (which are computer programmed too), rather than guitar riffs. These ones contribute almost exclusively to the rhythmic section. To give a general idea, we could define this album as a mixture of Aborym and The Berzeker, though closer to Black Metal than the last ones. The person behind all this is Vladimir Cochet, a quite a prolific French musician who has many other projects such as Weeping Birth, Accurst Journey, Mirrorthrone and Defeating Loneliness, in which he composes all the music and records all the instruments. Amazing! If you are open-minded concerning black metal, you would not waste your time listening to this.
