REVIEW: Unleashed - Hells Unleashed Century Media, 2002
8/10
Unleashed - Hells Unleashed - cover art After playing European festivals like With Full Force, Graspop and Mind Over Matter last year, the Swedish legends Unleashed are back with their first album since the somewhat disappointing "Warrior" was released in 1997. This is one of the two bands that was formed after the demise of Nihilist in 1989 (the other one was Entombed) and the band founder Johnny Hedlund is still with us. Unleashed have always stood for high quality old school death metal and with this album they once again prove that they are one of the top bands within the genre. Even though Unleashed are staying true to their roots they are not a boring band and this album is actually one of the most diverse death metal albums I have heard in a while with everything from excellent groovy, mid-paced tracks like "Don't Want To Be Born" and "Fly Raven Fly" to faster, more aggressive songs like "Hell's Unleashed", a wonderful song for death metal fans to enjoy. The vocals are very well done in the old Entombed style as well. What started out in the late 80's can still be enjoyed today and we should all be glad that there are some quality bands who never give up fighting even though money doesn't rain from the sky when you're playing this kind of music. If it wasn't for bands like Unleashed the metal scene would be a lot poorer. Hell is unleashed once again.
