Ever since I listened to the brand new Unleashed album back in September or October I have known that it was a winner and my opinion has not changed since then. The band was embraced by the whole fledgling death metal community way back in 1991 when they released their classic sophomore album "Where No Life Dwells" which I still hold as one of the milestones in the history of death metal, in particular when it comes to the Stockholm scene. Sharing stages with fellow comrades in arms such as Entombed, Grave and Dismember made them a force to be reckoned with as they helped mould the shapes of a young and exciting genre. As the black metal genre rose death metal was no longer as extreme and exciting to many young kids and time eventually took its toll on Unleashed and many others.
Gathering strength in order to strike again Unleashed opted for a well deserved vacation from the international stages until once again spreading their message to the world with "Sworn Allegiance" in 2004. Not quite what I had hoped for when a comeback was announced, I did not expect that much from their latest offering "Midvinterblot" either but luckily there are still surprises in the world of metal, or music in general for that matter, albeit rather few. The early half the album is indeed stellar and breathtaking, making a mark on the history map and without a doubt competing with every single death metal classic released so far. Mid-way through the quality of the songs drop slightly but overall Unleashed has produced the best album in their career next to "Where No Life Dwells" and they are now back for real. If you ever get the chance to catch them life don't miss out on your chance to get a piece of this legendary band. Mighty!
