REVIEW: Unlight Order - Through The Gates Of Torment
Temple Of Darkness Records, 2006
4/10
The hollow, average sound of this miniCD allows me to snatch sort of a black metal enthralled in the confuse mass, at first sight. Low frequencies are too swollen and trebles are significantly crippled in the mix. Equalizing the stereo helps a bit to my work and finally I´m able to grasp the whole thing. Looks like this band plays a black metal inspired in the well-known Northern legends whose names I won´t mention in order to not offend anyone´s intelligence and knowledge of the scene. This release features some visible weaknesses such as some tempo breaks that could have been better arranged, guitars lacking strength and showing a poor sound in mid paces and a general feeling of boring stuff left on the listener. Obviously we´re talking about a re-release of a demo, but that´s no reason to understate the relevance of the songs themselves which aren´t capable of suggesting anything really worthwhile for the future unless the band progresses quite a few steps ahead. “Through The Gates Of Torment” rides between the boring and the average rate. I´d put the blame on the collection of easy dull riffs which anyone could compose in a single rainy afternoon. If a riff is made off a few notes, at least we need it´s slightly cold, grim, groovy, anything really appealing (it mustn´t be necessarily catchy either). This is not the case... Nevermind the times you try, the subsequent listenings hardly bring something fresh or interesting to your ears. Unlight Order have still a long way to go to make something really interesting. It´s not a discarded band although expectations around their next release are reasonably low according to this piece of music. It´s up to them to change this.
