REVIEW: Unquintessence - Ruined (EP) Galy Records, 2002
8/10
Unquintessence - Ruined (EP) - cover art These black metal misanthropes are from Quebec and are highly pissed off. At least that's the impression I get when being aurally assailed by this 5 song CD. Only 3 years have gone by since the band Naggaroth folded and became Unquintessence, with Arkhaan and Scythrawl joining the founding members later on. On drums, Scythrawl is a madman, with some hyper-blasts breaking the skin and some technical breakdowns peeling it off. The songs aren't too long for their own good, either, which is something black metal occasionally bugs me with. Unquintessence riffs are similar to old Emperor and Immortal, and are well put together musically, with more of an echoing tone than the standard buzz. The vocals seethe in white hot rage, with only an occasional spoken passage breaking the Kult Ov Azazel-like shrieking. No lyric sheet was included with this promo, but I'll wager that they are as angry in written form as they are when spoken, or, screamed. An absence of commercially accepted black metal elements will undoubtedly push these guys high in the underground and keep the trendites at bay, which I assume is at least partially their goal. I really pick up an angry vibe from this piece of art and like it.
