REVIEW: Unsanctum - Ignite The Skies Cacophonous Records, 2003
4/10
Unsanctum - Ignite The Skies - cover art These young lads from the U.K (congrats on the Rugby WC win, Jonny Wilkinson is awesome) suffer from a really lousy production. Their raw songs with a blackmetally touch are actually quite nice, but the album sounds way too much like a demo for my liking. Unfortunately I think it's intentional, judging by the way the drums are heard for example. I would definitely like the bass to be more pronounced as well, but those black metal-ish bassists seem to be content with not being heard... On top of that they have another flaw, which I find terribly annoying which is that the vocals are desecrated by means of external effects. They also seem to find it a brilliant idea to record the vocals in a way that makes as many red lights as possible shine on the mixer board. Clippings and such is nothing I find interesting. I cannot bear fake vocals, this is not as bad as pitched growl, but anyways... If one looks past the fact that this album suffers from sucky sound and Atari Teenage Riot-style vocals, the young lads actually have potential. I am pretty confident that with a less shaky and cheap sounding production their blackadelic sound and atmosphere would come to its right. Instead this pretty much feels like waste of good music, and one can only imagine how good the album could have been. I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens on their next album. The band claims to be on a crusade against pop, but with a production such as this one I almost start longing for Britney. The guys show promise for the future, and it is a shame that their talent is not allowed to prosper on this album. I am way to cheap to pay money for an album with a quality as on "Ignite the skies". The most disturbing thing is still as mentioned above that one gets the feeling that the crappy production is intentional. If this is the case I can only advice them to go to the nearest proctologist looking for their heads, and come back showing what they are really made of on their next album. We don't want them saying "Oooops I did it again", do we?
