Unscared is a
German band that hails from Heppenheim which is located between Darmstadt and
Mannheim. They formed in the year 2000 at a local gig where the two original
members first met and decided that it was time for a new band. In September of
2002 they recorded this demo cd which features seven songs that follow a
somewhat amusing intro sample. With song titles like "Zombie Beer" and
"Dying In The Discotheque" it is hard to take a band seriously, unless
you're a big punk fan I guess, but Unscared actually has some good qualities.
Punk music has a close genre neighbour which is metallic in its nature and
that is of course thrash. This is also what this cd is all about. Unscared
takes us back 15-20 years in time when bands like Exodus, Destruction and
Kreator took the world by nuclear storm. After the first wave of bands the
thrash metal scene exploded before fading away into obscurity again (seen from
a mainstream point of view that is) until lately when old-school metal is once
again becoming more sought after, much thanks to the younger MTV generation
who are starting to discover that there were actually metal bands before
Machine Head and Mudvayne I believe. While inducing nostalgia to many
listeners there is unfortunately one thing that spoils it for me while
travelling from track to track on this demo cd and that is the vocalist. His
raw voice may fit very well into the pattern with bands like Exodus and Death
Angel but sometimes it doesn't sound that good in my ears, or in my brain if
you want to be correct. The music itself is pretty enjoyable party thrash at
times even though it gets a little bit stereotypical sometimes as well. For
hardcore fans of old-school thrash they might still be worth checking out.
Stand-out tracks: "Brainshake", "The Dinner Is
Served".
