REVIEW: Unshine - Promo 2003 Self-financed, 2003
6/10
Unshine - Promo 2003 - cover art Demos from the past do not often strike the listener with its clear and distinct sound but things are changing. Unshine from Finland have been around since 2001 and decided that it was worth the money to get a professional production for this 2- track promo disc of their's. The opening track "On The Broken Line" tells us what this young band is all about. The music is built upon rather basic hard rock / heavy metal rhythms and additional support from keyboards. The vocalist is a female and she has a pretty nice voice although a bit thin at times. To me it seems as if her voice would suit better for pop music than a rock or metal band like Unshine. The second track follows pretty much the same pattern although it is generally calmer and more atmospheric. This is where Unshine show their strength. While the opening track wasn't carrying any memorable melodies or exciting moments at all the female vocalist is doing a better job in "Patron Saint". Judging from these two tracks Unshine doesn't have what it takes to compete with major label bands but if you're into music in the gothic rock / metal vein they might be worth checking out.
