REVIEW: Urgrund - The Graven Sign Baphomet Records, 2002
8/10
Urgrund - The Graven Sign - cover art Chalk up another victory for Australia. This 4 piece black / war metal assault unit have written a rich and satisfying album in "The Graven Sign". While I can pick out parts that remind me of fellow Aussies D666 in the riffing of "Scourge Of God", and others that might be likened to any one of their countrymen's bands, Urgrund possess a sound all their own overall. It's as powerful and full-bodied as a pint of your favorite Irish ale. The tempos vary from the classic war metal blast to "Heathen Dionysian"'s rigid and somewhat militant feel. "Besieged Cities" would get my vote for the best cut on this album, with a tractor-beam appeal encompassing both brutality and melody. As per the Australian norm, the lyrics are concise yet abyssic in their depth; a paradoxical objectiveness borrowing from great minds such as Aristotle and famed Aussie rebel Edward Kelly. Lead guitarist Bolthorn and fellow 6-string slayer Fiendsickness share the written and spoken lyrical duties, while the bass is handled by Scurvy and drums by Thoth Amon. Urgrund retains enough of their scene's traits to remain a part of it, but have also developed a unique and crushing authenticity. FAVORITE TRACKS: "Besieged Cities", "On Stones Marked Black".
