REVIEW: Usipian - Dead Corner Of The Eye Metal Fortress Entertainment, 2005
7.5/10
Usipian - Dead Corner Of The Eye - cover art When listening to Usipian I can immediately draw comparisons between them and the likes of Morbid Angel and Suffocation (right down to the Dan Seagrave cover art). Now by saying this I don’t mean that they are a Morbid Angel Clone like so many other bands nowadays, I mean that the play fast and brutal death metal music, and they play it well. Here and there I can hear some issues with the production but I am sure tat it is intentional to produce a more raw and brutal quality to the sound. The vocalist shares many similarities in his vocal style with Ross Dolan from Immolation, and my only problem with his performance is that he gets to be a bit repetitive. The same can be said about the drums, now don’t get me wrong I love the infinite blast-beat sound with bands like Krisiun, however it doesn’t sound as good when the rest of the instruments are going slower than the drummer. The bassist is (sadly) nearly inaudible throughout a good portion of the album but when you are able to hear him you can tell that he is a good musician, and I would like to hear more from him on future releases. The guitarists accomplish the Death Metal mood with their playing abilities and they lend quite a bit of appeal as their performance adds a definite “old school death metal” feeling to the overall performance. I would say that this is a good solid death metal release, it’s brutal and it’s heavy and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I hope that this band continues to make music for many years (and I hope that Dan Seagrave does all of the cover art), recommended to fans of Suffocation and “old school death metal” in general.
