It was apparent to everyone who has been following Usurper that their new album "Cryptobeast" would mark something special in their over a decade long career. Not only have their old drummer Joe "Apocalyptic" Warlord returned to the fold but they have also replaced their long-time vocalist with new guy Daniel "Danny" Lawson who have previously been spotted in the lesser known grindcore act Cumchrist. As before the music of Usurper is impossible to categorize but they do not try to hide their admiration of the underground bands from the 80s who made extreme metal what it is today. In my opinion Usurper managed to found a great replacement in Danny Lawson as his growling is both monstrous, aggressive and passionate. You can easily feel his presence in every single song and he will definitely become an integral part of the band for the future. The sharp, precise guitar work of founding member Rick Scythe can not be critized either. Usurper is uncomprising extreme metal for those who appreciate old-school metal with a modern touch. Having worked with acclaimed producer Neil Kernon (Judas Priest, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse) at Chicago's Rax Trax Studios you can be sure that this album comes with a mighty sound worthy of a band of this high quality. "Cryptobeast" is violent, groovy, raw and powerful at the same time. Who can resist an anthem such as "Kill For Metal"? Usurper spit in the face of nu-metal and flush emocore down the toilet. Bring out your bullet belt and studs, turn up your speakers and let the Chicago natives conquer your body and mind. Usurper are finally back where they belong and "Cryptobeast" is no doubt their finest offering to this date.
