REVIEW: Vāli - Forlatt Foreshadow Productions, 2004
9/10
Vāli - Forlatt - cover art I canīt deny the evidence; I love this kind of releases: so natural, so honest, so pure. When music comes from the heart and soul, fretsounds and other “out of place” stuff can be reasonably ignored. “Forlatt” is a recording far from being cute and polished, completely true in that sense. None the less, this is not black metal; Vāli is nature music, intimate folk, a sonic caress. I discovered this band by chance, when I was through the net looking for something I canīt recall right now. I listened a sample of “Et Ensomt Minne” and I instantly fell in love. There was just a guitar, but it was so beautiful that I couldnīt look forward to listen to the whole album. Now itīs on my hands, Iīm not disappointed at all. Who are Vāli? There is not much available information about this band; itīs a Norwegian one man act whose first release is this album. In fact, Vāli is clad in an aura of mystery –if Iīm not wrong there is no official website for example-, but I honestly donīt care a lot, since music is the issue here. Great music, I should add... The first reference I could give you along the description of “Forlatt” is Ulverīs accoustic album “Kveldssanger”; the atmosphere is very similar and the execution of the songs, based on accoustic guitars, is in the same vein too. Anyway Vāli is still better than Garm and co. in their approach to nature, I dare to say.

These delicate guitars weave a forest of notes that mystically wraps the listener, providing a strong atmosphere of serenity hard to ignore. We can also notice beautiful apparitions of a violin and a piano, so the music earns richness and ambience. In some passages one can feel as if the notes were snowflakes falling upon the firs, seen from a lonely cabin in the forest. The ten tracks conforming this album, however, are all instrumental –except for that song where a girl sings, using her voice without singing lyrics-. Nevermind; this album speaks for itself thousand more times than millions of verses filling the booklets nowadays. When the two guitars collide in those precious harmonies, conforming delicate dances in the dark, literally tearing the silence, thereīs nothing else to do than contemplate the visions “Forlatt” wishes to convey. For silence is a great element in the music of Vali, believe it or not. Looks like if Vāli have “received” these songs off observation, calmness, meditation in the forests. The sounds emerging from “Forlatt” are the token of this. This is music to remind us mother Nature, to emphasize inner emotions, a momentary banish from the material world. Awesome.
