Two years have passed since this edition saw the light of day and now destiny has make it sound on my stereo. It came here described as “accoustic folk from Finland” or something like that. Expecting some Tenhi cheap followers or Korpiklaani copycats I pressed the button and, darn, it was none of those, and it was great! Well, take it esy Fjordi, sometimes low expectations elevate quality, surely. The ancients said further listenings wipe away any trace of blind illusion and mirages, so that habit was painstakingly carried out this time as well. And the veredict brought no radical changes; this band has been a relative surprise, in spite of their bizarre name! The core of the sound is a strong classic medieval feeling, breathen throughout the recording, but not the medieval concept In Extremo have, but the one based on clean guitars and vocals the folky kind. In fact, the rest of the music is in the background. Drums are not present most of the time; the bass is quite convincing when it comes on stage playing witty lines. The keys and choirs appear from time to time to support the main music. Each song is different from the rest; obviously, there´s a will. Maybe that typical pretentious will of the young bands who try to make the best music in their first serious release. But I admire Will... the wish to transcend, to surmount the clouds, to make something unique, is always praiseworthy. I don´t like to make song-by-song reviews, but this is an exception to portray the mentioned variety. “Karjala” is a precious tune that could remind of Blind Guardian´s epic mellow hymns. “Sulanut Lumi” is a melancholic song with rainy guitars and tragic percussives. “Velvet Night´s Mysticism” starts with a vocal duet and then the band shifts between classic folk sounds and medieval ressonances, always under the main guidance of guitar and vocals. “Teatteri” shows a certain progressive leaning, with cheerful, rich bass notes behind. And the last song is a melée with plenty of changes where medieval tunes, folk passages, raspy vocals (!) and other things float frolicking.
Varied, nice, promising. Hey guys, when are you going to release some more stuff?
