REVIEW: Valkyrend Varieté - Tonttu Self-released, 2007
7/10
Valkyrend Varieté - Tonttu - cover art These guys contacted me some time ago to get a review some of their first material, which resulted in something quite fresh and enjoyable. Some months ago I received news from them in the shape of this mini-CD consisting of three songs. Shorter in length than the first release, it comes as an anticipated teaser for what is to come, and basically it carves the folky way suggested in their previous material. The title track itself is a traditional tune arranged by the band, and the other two songs ooze folk feeling so the stylistic shift the band is taking seems to be pretty evident (unless the next album differs radically from these tunes). Songs are straight and go to the core of the thing, avoiding complex structures and engraving simple patterns with only two or three instruments at the same time. First is the flute, then comes a piano, now there's a guitar that's going along with solemn vocals. Overall, I see easier compositions breathing a strong storyteller mood, and arrangements are not the kind observed on their debut release (except in "Vapaus," where those traces exist). We'll have to wait and behold which is the path taken by this musical project in a real full-length album to see if their potential bursts out.
