REVIEW: Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight Inside Out Music, 2002
8.5/10
Vanden Plas - Beyond Daylight - cover art Since they started out in the late 80's, the German band Vanden Plas have quickly become one of the world's most successful progressive metal bands together with Symphony X, Dream Theater and perhaps also a few others. This time they have yet again worked with Markus Teske at the Bazement Studio where Symphony X also have been assisted by his talented hands and ears. This results in a flawless production which isn't that unusual in today's high-tech world but it still makes the music more enjoyable. While Dream Theater and Symphony X have an, in my humble opinion, heavier and more powerful appearance, the music of Vanden Plas is more emotional and perhaps even slightly melancholic in its nature, something that for sure doesn't make it worse but only different. These guys have been playing with the same line-up for many years now and this is probably one of several explanations why the band have become so successful. The band members know each other very well and the music seems to flow naturally for each one of them. This is an album full of technical progressive metal, emotional vocals and simple harmony. The first pressing will also include a cover version of the classic Kansas son "Point Of No Return". A very fine album that should please all fans of symphonic rock or progressive metal. Just listen to "Scarlet Flowerfields" and you will see what Vanden Plas at their best sound like.
