REVIEW: Veles - U Senkama Srpskih Suma Self-financed, 2005
6/10
Veles - U Senkama Srpskih Suma - cover art This is the first recording from Veles, a Kragujevac based Black Metal band from Serbia. "U senkama srpskih suma" (In the Shadows of Serbian Forests) consists of three songs in traditional symphonic, melodic BM style, with slight influences from Thrash Metal in the guitar work and song structure. The songs are very typical for the genre and it’s obvious that the band is young and only starting their musical career. You can notice it in a way how the different parts from different instruments are put together, which isn’t always done in the most logical way, like you have thrash guitar and CoF keyboards at the same time. Still, there are a number of interesting parts in all three songs that show potential for Veles and make this demo worth listening to. That goes mostly for the 2nd riff in ‘Pod hordama mojim’ (Under My Hordes) where keys kick in, that was a really good one. Besides regular screaming vocals the guys decided to use a lot of some grooving growl that sounds good. The production is almost good, I object to the sound of guitars and its loudness (or unloudness, it’s hard to hear them sometimes) and drums are too much in front in the 1st song. As for lyrics, they are praising the glory of the ancient Serbian pagan nation, but also about ‘Unholy master’ which is somewhat excluding each other, but nevermind. As I said, this is the first recording of a young band and in my view many mistakes can be forgiven, especially since the demo features several very interesting parts.
