REVIEW: Velvetcut - Thirteen Firebox Records, 2006
5/10
Velvetcut - Thirteen - cover art I don´t really know where the Firebox guys are going. Well, it´s not so hard to imagine. I presume their goal is to expand the business signing bands able to widespread the Firebox banner everywhere. Therefore, what once was a powerful underground label specialized in doom metal split in two parts; Firedoom stood supporting the most extreme slow music and Firebox was directed towards a more commercial direction, incorporating the best selling acts to their roster. Velvetcut belongs to a musical style able to hit the charts or achieve relevant sales figures, of course further than My Shameful for example. They are from Suomi Finland Perkele and their debut album is called “Thirteen”. Velvetcut moves on well-known territories trodden many times before: this bunch of songs exhibit the classic alternation between agony vocals over mellow instrumentation and energetic passages ridden by power chords. Elements as slight electronic raids, smooth melodies, occasional female vocals, keys... are also present in the recording. Some tracks could be defined as melancholic rock with distorted guitars and groovy drums. Others carve in poppy sadness already heard millions of times in similar acts. Overall the guys try to play catchy lines woven under pop classic patterns in a melancholic harmony approach. There is no trace of originality here. It´s really hard to perceive a token of real feeling, natural creation or spontaneous combustion of the soul. Despite the listening isn´t certainly annoying, I´m going to forget the name of this band as soon as I put the CD back in the shelter after the listening. Velvetcut do nothing special and there are other creative bands full of potential waiting to be discovered or experienced.
