REVIEW: Vhäldemar - Fight To The End Arise Records, 2002
7/10
Vhäldemar - Fight To The End - cover art In co-operation with Arise Records the Spanish power metal band Vhäldemar brings us their debut album covered with a mounted soldier from the past. Seeing a cover picture like that one you can't help but thinking Manowar at once and this young Spanish band actually sounds a little like them but with a thick power metal coating that pushes the sound closer to bands like Gamma Ray and Primal Fear. I have never been a big fan of Manowar and I definitely think that this new band is a lot more livelier and vivid than the "true metal kings" ever were. This doesn't mean that I love this album with all of my heart though. While being very compact and mature in their sound, Vhäldemar suffers from two problems that may come from them being such a young band (they started out as late as the late 90's). The first is that the songs are a little too simple sometimes and I would have wished for something more complex or at least something that makes them special. The second thing is that I am not too fond of the vocalist. As he sings with his usual voice it doesn't sound as good as I want it to but when the big choruses kick in Vhäldemar is shown at their best. Even though they are young they show a lot of promising qualities and I especially like the atmospheric interludes that can be found here and there. A good first release from the Vizcaya natives!
