REVIEW: Vhäldemar - I Made My Own Hell Arise Records, 2003
7/10
Vhäldemar - I Made My Own Hell - cover art The debut album from Spain's Vhäldemar was not one of the highlights of 2002 but it was definitely a pleasant listen for everyone into melodic and technical power metal. I didn't have any expectations at all when I got to hear the follow-up composition "I Made My Own Hell". I always like to bring out what is positive in a band's music first as it makes me feel better about it then so let's not break the pattern. These guys are in their 20s just like most metal musicians with a label contract but they are all very skilled in their trade, something that becomes clear from the very beginning of their second album. As I already knew that from having heard the debut album it wasn't much of a surprise though and they still don't do much to hide their musical influences. Gamma Ray, Helloween and Iron Maiden riffs can be heard all over this record and the vocalist is doing his Kai Hansen thing pretty nicely by adding some of his own personal touch. Vhäldemar display plenty of instrumentalism on a high level on this album but just like the case with most bands, no matter what genre we're dealing with, they do not reach the same heights when it comes to song writing skills. There are little pieces here and there in the songs that impress me but there are no single song that takes off. If you liked their first album, if you find the concept of Spanish power metal exciting or if you just have too much money for your own good then check this out.
