REVIEW: Vicious Art - Fire Falls And The Waiting Waters Threeman Recordings, 2004
7.5/10
Vicious Art - Fire Falls And The Waiting Waters - cover art "Fire Falls And The Waiting Waters" is not actually the typical title of a death metal album but then again Sweden's Vicious Art is not like any other band. This young band was created in 2003 by several well-known veterans from Stockholm are black and death metal bands like Dark Funeral, Entombed and Guidance Of Sin. This the way brutal death metal is supposed to be like - fast, grinding and tight without sacrificing melody completely. There are nods towards Cannibal Corpse in here and some songs remind me a lot of Hypocrisy minus the epic arrangements and the Abyss sound. Vicious Art do not offer the listener any news but they do bring back bits and pieces of the wonderful past of brutal death metal. They know their metal history well and their collective experience helps in making this an album well worth spending some money on if you're a fan of the genre. The production is flawless and Kristian Wåhlin is a wizard as usual with his colors and pencils to make the cover art shine as well. The vocalist Joakim Widfeldt is a new voice for most people as he handled bass duties for the Dark Funeral side project Dominion Caligula but he displays a nice array of growling techniques here. The only thing this album lacks is originality but how many albums can be found in that category these days?
