Friends of teutonic heavy metal and mobs keen on thunderous and crispy riffing reminiscing of the glorious days when Accept, Running Wild and Grave Digger was in vogue, will rejoice over this platter which boasts semi-legendary Victory’s finest and most cherished moments.
Well, that’s what I assume anyway. Truth be told I haven’t acquainted myself with this renowned outfit from Hannover until know. However, before we move on it is of great importance to mention that this compilation cd, “Fule To The Fire”, contains re-recorded versions of the original songs, here with Jioti Parcharidis of Human Fortress fame on vocals.
We are served fleshy cuts from the whole career, which discography-wise implies eight full-length albums, even though the nostalgia lens frequently returns to the record “Temples Of Gold” (1990), most likely a milestone for the band. It nevertheless tends to drift into a haze where every nuance dissolves, making the outcome quite anonymous, lacking inspirational momentum and contours.
But don’t get me wrong, this is undeniable a fine lesson in simplistic German heavy metal, comprising exquisite guitarwork, a pocketful of catchy hooks, plain yet powerful drumming and top-notch singing by Jioti. My main objection is therefore the lack of characterization. You can easily be deluded into thinking this is a put-up job just to cash-in on gullible fans. But let’s not make that mistake, this is after all a nice introduction to what Victory and classic heavy metal is all about. It’s not particularly refreshing and it will most certainly not revolutionize your world, but if raw sing-along-metal does the trick for you, then this is a safe pick.
