Spain is not very well known when it comes to metal bands, for many reasons that I won´t analyze right now. Xtreem Music (ex-Repulse Records) is probably the most important record label in Spain as far as strong metal is concerned, and they´re always eager to sign interesting groups. Dave Rotten and co. have released this album of aggressive black/death metal that is not bad at all, and, one important thing, it´s not more of the same. Vidres A La Sang (“Glass in the blood” could be a translation, more or less) try to do something original with this their first release, mixing melodic and fast black metal with some death metal elements. Some say they´ve got influences from Immortal and Morbid Angel, I don´t agree utterly with this but you can figure out where the things are going towards. Some moments remind me of Aeternus, because of the black metal music with growlings that is a constant in this LP. Iron Maiden also comes to mind, with melodic, heavy metal tunes appearing every now and then, giving the whole album a melodic approach that avoids monotony. Production and technical skills are very competent, and as a curiosity I´ll say the lyrics are in Catalonian language and inspired by a famous poet from that land, Miquel Martí i Pol. Really weird but it´s fine, it´s very disappointing to see often the lyrics of other bands, pathetically writing about pus and blood, and when a band tries to step into other territories in the lyrical aspect, it´s something which really deserves my appreciation. All in all, “Vidres a la Sang” is a correct album, with quite variations (without being too complex or twisted), but overall pure metal under many forms. A band to have in sight, for the second album could be a great surprise.
