This demo-tape from the German one-man project Vinterriket
was first released on the 15th of May 2000 in a limited edition of only 100
copies. These were sold out within a few weeks and the label decided to
re-release it with 500 copies this time. Put the demo cd in your stereo and
get ready to embark upon a journey through snow-covered hills and majestic
mountain landscapes. You will be accompanied by dark, atmosheric and beautiful
keyboard orchestration all the way. There is a slight touch of folk and
medieval music in there as well. You don´t have to worry about not
understanding the Norwegian track titles either since their music is
completely instrumental without as much as a word being said or sung. Dark,
ambient music has begun to merge with the metal world in the late 1990's and
Vinterriket is one of the resulting and most promising acts evolving from this
highly interesting musical evolution. If you enjoy bands like Mortiis and
Dargaard then Vinterriket will not disappoint you. The only thing bad you
could utter on this demo is that the keyboards sometimes get a little
monotonous but most of the time the cold symphonies from Vinterriket sound
well-composed and would fit very well as a movie soundtrack. The sound quality
is also very good for a demo but with only keyboards you will also have a much
easier recording process. The band is currently looking for a label to release
their first full-length album and I really think Vinterriket deserves to be
given a fair chance. Their music would most definitely suite one of the dark,
ambient sublabels on Napalm Records for example. I´m looking forward to hear
what Vinterriket could perform with a bigger
label.
