REVIEW: Vintersorg - Cosmic Genesis Napalm Records, 2000
8.5/10
Vintersorg - Cosmic Genesis - cover art It seems like Andreas Hedlund (aka Vintersorg) is ready to expand the fanbase by writing most of the lyrics in English this time. Since only about 10 million people understand Swedish this is probably a bright move... "Cosmic Genesis" is yet another tribute to nature in all her forms but as the title implies the focus this time around lies on the mysteries of the universe. Even though most Vintersorg trademarks can still be found on this album too the band has begun to break new ground by developing a more modern and progressive sound than before. Although there is no other band like this the new sound could be compared to Borknagar but it is less intense and more melodic. The vocals are as usual both black and clean but mostly clean. In my opinion the black metal vocals are totally unnecessary and the Vintersorg sound would do much better without them. Just like on previous releases they often sound constructed and don't go with the flow as vocals should do. A good thing is that the clean vocals are more varied than before but it seems like some of the former folkishness has been let go of which is a pity. Fortunately there is a lot more of that in his other band Otyg. "Cosmic Genesis" is the most mature and modern album in the Vintersorg series but it doesn't feel quite as genuine and passionate as I think it could. A nice surprise is the cover of Uriah Heep's "Rainbow Demon".
