REVIEW: Vintersorg - Hedniskhjärtad Napalm Records, 1998
9/10
Vintersorg - Hedniskhjärtad - cover art Andreas Hedlund (later vocalist of Otyg and nowadays vocalist of Norway's Borknagar) formed a band called Vargatron back in 1994 which later on evolved into a one-man project and finally became Vintersorg. The material on his debut mini album "Hedniskhjärtad" comes from the days when the project went under the name Vargatron but despite being old songs they show a great deal of maturity which is unusual for a debut album. In other words Napalm Records made the right decision to sign the band and Vintersorg has not failed to live up to the expectations on him, not with his solo band nor with any of his other projects. The music presented is somewhat folk influenced black metal a little similar to what Ulver did in the past before going undefinable. While his other main band at that time, Otyg, based their songs on folk music and then added metal riffs, Vintersorg is more black metal based with progressive and folk elements added. The result is great to hear and Vintersorg has managed to capture the majestic grandeur of the nature in the north of Sweden on this album. The vocals oscillate between grim black vocals and the characteristic deep voice which gives the music the characteristic epic feeling. Andreas Hedlun also presents himself as a very talented multi-instrumentalist who performs vocals, guitars, bass and acoustic guitars in these five tracks. His bandmate from Otyg, Cia Hedmark, also helps out with female vocals on the melancholic "Stilla" and Vargher (Marcus E. Norman) from Bewitched lends his keyboard and programming skills. If you like epic and melodic black metal with folk music influences you can't go wrong with Vintersorg, especially not the early releases which are less progressive than the later ones.
