REVIEW: Violent Asylum - demo 2003 Self-financed, 2003
6/10
Violent Asylum - demo 2003 - cover art Violent Asylum was originally formed in October 2001 in Romford, Essex, England after a guy named Spencer met up with another guy named Mark at a Pantera gig in London. Instead of letting themselves be dragged into the flourishing neo-metal scene in their country they were inspired by Swedish bands like The Haunted, At The Gates and In Flames. In the early days they were known under the name Decay and they recorded their first demo under this moniker. Now, after a name change which the band felt necessary, they have recorded a second demo at Adelaide studios in Brentwood. Most of the music on this demo is firmly rooted in the Swedish melodic death / thrash metal scene but they have also included some Iron Maiden sounding melodies here and there. Violent Asylum already sound very mature despite being such a young band and it is no coincidence that they have landed a support slot for the one and only Devin Townsend in late October. A solid production and a good vocalist makes this demo worthy of a few spins in the stereo. However, I feel that there is a little bit too much re-cycling of basic death / thrash riffs on this demo and it would be nice to hear something new once in a while. A good demo nonetheless and I am sure that Violent Asylum develop their own sound in a very near future.
