REVIEW: Violent Work Of Art - Automated Species Swedmetal Records, 2007
7/10
Violent Work Of Art - Automated Species - cover art Violent Work of Art is a Swedish band that has been around since 1994 and Automated Species is their latest album. This band delivers something that is best described as industrial metalcore, which basically consist of metalcore vocals along with some heavy programming. Surprisingly the band is signed to Swedmetal Records (which releases mostly sleaze and power metal) and that made me expect the worst. Guess if I was surprised. Violent Work Of Art is brutal, heavy and Automated Species contains some great tracks. The only downside is the clean vocal, but that is on the other hand terribly bad and so out of tune that it is painful. The track “A Sad Creation” is just impossible to listen to since the clean vocal in the refrain sounds like it has been recorded by a tone deaf monkey. It is most amazing how skilled musicians can release an album that contains details that are so bad, especially since the rest of the album is great. Violent Work of Art needs to completely stop using clean vocals or spend a serious amount of money on a skilled voice coach. Still I must recommend that you give this album a try. There are many parts of Automated Species that are so great that the album still is worth listening to.
