Gregorian chant will greet you as you enter the
monastery of this Avant-garde sensation from the land down under... A most
spiritual entrance marking only the beginning of this esoteric experience.
You'll be stunned by nostalgic cello arrangements written by the lead
guitarist Samantha Escabre who's also responsible for that muscled electric
stringed instrument. This Virgin Black mass is accompanied by a seven piece
choirs in its celebration. "Walk Without Limbs" is a mysterious and chilling
composition due to its strange ambiance and choir lines sounding out of key.
Very spooky! Sounds like a mystic initiation emerging into a hard and hysteric
pounding beat. One strong opus. The lead vocals are mostly made of clean and
somewhat opera-like tonalities but here and there a beasty death is most
likely to scratch your eardrums. In this religion, the devil is allowed and
welcome to enter the church. "Museum of Iscariot" is a composition made of
three movements. One is purely symphonic, the second reminiscent of a
medireview complaint conducted by acoustic guitar and a tortured electric
solo. Third, "The Procession" is surely going to make your spirit rise up.
"Lamenting Kiss" is on one side a prayer sung by monks facing a powerful
metal deity. "Sombre Romantic" finds all its sorrow and pain in the
instrumental "Weep For Me". You might need to be exorcised after
sabbatically indulging yourself in "I Sleep With The Emperor" being the most
extreme and heavy part of this mass. If you continue on, that's exactly what
the holy priest will do and thus relieve your darkened
soul...
