If 2003's Dechristianize saw Vital Remains revitalize their, uh, remains, hehe, 2007 sees the band firmly established and ready to crush the world with Icons of Evil. The line-up for both of these truly epic albums is Tony Lazaro (rhythm guitar/bass), Dave Suzuki (lead guitar/drums/backing vocals), and Mr. Deicide himself Glen Benton (vocals, of course). What an abusive but beautiful creation of damnation! If the preceding album found favor with you, the new one should, too, as it follows the blueprint of Dechristianize rather closely. See the titular track appearing second on each album as well as an ellipsis in the fifth song, for examples. While this might be seen as a reason to complain, no true fan of epic Death Metal should find much to draw their ire.
Musically the evil is tangible, the brutality inexorable, and the majesty untouchable, all abetted by Erik Rutan's lead crystal clear production. Dave Suzuki has to be one of the most talented musicians in the world today even if only considering his masterful drum skills, although his lead guitar work of the traditional Metal variety is easily better. Clearly he worshipped at the altar of true masters of shred. See the Yngwie Malmsteen cover for further proof, non-believer. Benton's voice is in fine form, perhaps more brutal but basic than on Deicide's latest magnum opus, and he must be supremely satisfied with his career at this point. Otherwise some sonic points of reference can be discerned this time around, including Immolation, Incantation, Morbid Angel, and even Deicide.
At times the blast beats make Goatwhore seem tame but overall this record's hour of original music absolutely smokes and sears. First Benton 'covers' Deep Purple on a Deicide record and now Yngwie on a Vital Remains album. One must wonder what may come next. Good times, folks. Well, if Death Metal is your cup o' overflowin' molten tea, that is. \m/
