REVIEW: Vreid - Pitch Black Brigade Tabu Recordings, 2006
6.5/10
Vreid - Pitch Black Brigade - cover art Out of the tragedy that ended the life of Norwegian folk / black metallers Windir another entity known as Vreid was born. From the 2004 debut album "Kraft" the band have taken another step towards the nowadays semi-trendy black rock'n'roll which mixes the primitive, almost hypnotic Darkthrone / early Satyricon vibe with driving Motörhead riffs. The recipe is simple but the final result is both dark and dynamic, giving new and much needed fuel to the Norwegian black metal scene. The problem with a simple recipe is however that there are only a relatively small number of combinations available which results in a collection of songs that sometimes sound too similar to each other. "Pitch Black Brigade" is not a complete failure but the concept has been taken further already by other bands and even though "Left To Hate" is a very nice, energetic song, there is something missing in order to surpass the band's impressive debut. The cold, harsh vocals are however very well done. Let's hope that strike three will be more lethal.
