It's got to be a
mixture of instict and experience. Sometimes your
receive a
CD and just by
looking at the cover you KNOW that the band is going to
kick
ass. Then you
read the press release and that feeling becomes even
stronger.
By the time
that you put the disc in the CD player, it doesn't take
more
than a few
seconds to be 100% sure that you are about to listen to a
killer
release.
Well this is exactly the case with We, the killer Norwegians
from
Oslo. My
reaction to their music was instant. The cover reminded me of
SHEAVY's
"Celestial Hi-Fi" and the actual music is not a million miles
away
either. Both bands are blessed to have a killer singer (and we all
know
that
there are not too many good singers around) in their ranks.
However
Thomas
Felberg, the singer of We, definitely has a very unique and
distinct
colour
in his voice, whilst the SHEAVY singer has identical vocals
to those of
Ozzy. But it is not just the charisma of this great singer that
makes
We
special. Every single composition on this album is great, no
matter if
the
style is out and out powerful and aggressive stoner Metal
-like
"Toothgottago" the sixth song of the album that happens to be my
absolute
favoured- or very slow and psychedelic / spaced out rock that
brings
back
memories of the 60's. However even with the spaced out songs
We manage
to
maintain the power and the glory that so many other bands fail
to
include,
resolting to creating sleepy songs. This is definitely not the
case
with We,
who additionally manage to come up with songs that present us
with
every
possible combination of rythms and vibes and make them all
sound
tremendously interesting! How they quite do it, don't ask me; ask
them,
they
might be able to explain that to you. I suspect that their
ability has
something to do with talent (and they do have that in ample
quantities)
and
the fact that the band has traveled Europe up and down
several times
playing
small gigs and big festivals either as headliners
(Eurosonic Festival
in
Groeningen Holland) or as guests (Roskilde
Festival). They are
experienced
and they give the impression that they have
paid their "road dues" and
that
shows very clearly in the music of this
album. (Their label has
released it
both on CD and also on two double
gatefold black and multicoloured
limited
vinyl editions) I definitely wish
that I had checked them out when they
played at the Borderline in London
(11-Sep- 1999 suporting Masters of
Reality).
It's unfortunete that I did
not. However the one thing that I promise,
is
that I will try to check out
as much of their impressive back catalogue
as
possible.
