REVIEW: Walhalla - Firereich Root Of All Evil Records, 2000
7.5/10
Walhalla - Firereich - cover art Although I find it pretty lame referring to this band as a super group Walhalla is a promising new rising force within black metal. The label has to do this to promote their albums but I will not go there myself. However, featuring members of the Finnish bands Thy Serpent, Soulgrind and Gloomy Grim you can be sure that the music is of high quality. The kind of black metal that Walhalla is playing is very riff-happy and has a lot of obvious thrash metal influences which makes the music more playful and lively. They may remind a little of the Swedish Witchery although they are blacker and more extreme. The band may have chosen their song titles poorly since the mix of Nordic mythology and modern war theme together with semi-German words will automatically make a lot of people think that they are a band pretty far out on the right wing. I don't have a clue whether that's true or not so I'll let you figure it out on your own. For being a Root Of All Evil release the sound quality is very good which I'm happy about. The music is as I said very riff-happy but unfortunately it gets a little tiresome and monotonous in the end. Walhalla is here to stay though and this is a good solid debut album.
