Watchtower was an US progressive thrash-heavy metal band that brought technical skills and twisted metal to another dimension with this release. Forget about Dream Theater or things like that, Watchtower was a monster halfway between high-pitched vocals heavy metal acts in the vein of Helloween and jazzy twisted music. Many thrash metal elements are also manifested every now and then, too. The result is an unique combination that is hard to categorise, but surely it won´t leave you indifferent. Some people really love this album (Chuck Schuldiner from Death seemed to appreciate it a lot, until the point that the influence of Watchtower can be noticed in the more technical period of his band), while others dislike it. Two things are specially disgusting when one is listening to “Control and resistance”: on the first hand, the voice of Alan Tecchio is annoying as hell, screamy and “shrieky” like Jamie Lee Curtis through a multiple orgasm. Imagine King Diamond yells but with still higher notes, well, I don´t know if you make the idea, but believe me when I say it´s torturing...! On the second hand, drums are electronic in several fills, and they don´t seem to give the proper sound or fit at all. And it´s really a pity, but these two pains in the ass stain the album, the music itself, that could have been better. But another thing must be noted: the music is very, very twisted, with plenty of tempo changes, strange guitar licks and jazzy hints. “Nervous” could be a keyword here, why not, for rhythm is always frolicking from traditional metal patterns to weird paces unknown by many listeners and musicians. Technically speaking this album has no bad things, certainly: guitar player Ron Jarzombek (later thrashing strings with Gordian Knot) is hell of a guitarist, Doug Keyser is an immense bass monster and Rick Colaluca can break your neck with a single drum fill. About the vocalist, everything´s said... Sound is, let´s say, correct. An album “just for musicians”? Hmmmm.... maybe, maybe... Well, you have a lot of data to decide if you are interested or not in this LP.
