REVIEW: Wheel Of Doom - Ladiatia (EP) Four Tune Records, 2002
6.5/10
Wheel Of Doom - Ladiatia (EP) - cover art Wheel Of Doom is a band hailing from Japan that started out in the summer of 1998. "Latiatia" is their debut album and it is released through the band's own label Four Tune Records. You can't deny the fact that the American hard rock / metal scene of the 90's have had a very big musical impact on this band and Japanese heavy music in general but Wheel Of Doom have not just copied a given formula. Like many other American bands in this particular genre they have also tried to mix slower, passionate rock music where clean vocals are used with more aggressive sections built on heavy neo-thrash riffs. The two main things that separate Wheel Of Doom from most of the American competition is first of all that they use growling vocals and indeed very good ones and second that they have incorporated some oriental rhythms. This is something that I think the band should focus on more in the future because I like to hear bands who dare to experiment and not just follow the rules of the trade. Wheel Of Doom sounds great during the heavier sections of this album but they fail where so many of the new American bands fail as well which is when they go slower and use the clean vocals. To say that the clean vocals are lousy would be an exaggeration but they don't always sound that good to be totally honest. Another thing that I would like to remark on is that the music sounds a little chaotic and unstructured to me but that is the way I feel about most nu-metal bands as well so you might not want to take my word for it. Wheel Of Doom have still produced a good solid first release that should be of interest to fans of contemporary heavy rock and nu-metal in particular even though others may very well fancy it too. If this band was playing in my area (which will probably never happen but still...) I wouldn't hesitate to go see them.
