REVIEW: White Lion - Mane Attraction Atlantic Records, 1991
7.5/10
White Lion - Mane Attraction - cover art Now here's the GLAM-orous rock band that kicked seriously large asses back in the days of the post rock n' roll era. Whitesnake had already converted to their glam rock religion, and in that time there were numerous other such bands fighting for their small piece of land in the vast sea of commercial rock - Damn Yankees, Bad Religion, China Rain, Mötley Crüe, Firehouse etc. are all very well known names of those times. White Lion, built and "mane-tained" by guitarist Vito Bratta, had its fair share of the big pie the industry was so eager to hand out to every band with a "stylish" sound and looks. "Mane Attraction" didn't do very well commercially, but fans of the band and of the genre weren't too disappointed by this album. Although not all songs are as good as it was to be expected from a band of this calibre, it is well worth having on your shelf. "Broken Heart", "Love Don't Come Easy", "You're All I Need", "Farewell To You" are the highlights of the record, but almost all of these are to be found on the officially released "Best Of", so I really don't know why anyone would care to purchase this album today when its entire essence is to be found on a Best Of compilation (and Mike Tramp actually finishes in-tune at the end of "Love Don't Come Easy" on the Best Of - as opposed to this record, where he finishes a bit off), but I nevertheless do advice you to get it if you have the chance - I wasn't sorry for doing so, even though I was expecting more (at the time). There is also a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan included - "Blue Monday" is a guitar instrumental, which is not included on any other record of the band. Not much more to say really: your usual Hair Metal with naive and pointless lyrics, rock n' roll vibe, sparkling guitars and high-pitch, clean vocals. Everything an 80's Pop-Metal fan would be interested in. The kind of music that could appeal to both "teenagers and house-wives" - commercial, melodic, elegant, rock.
