REVIEW: Whitesnake - Starkers In Tokyo EMI Records, 1997
9/10
Whitesnake - Starkers In Tokyo - cover art If there ever existed a must-have Whitesnake album, then the live acoustic recorded in Tokyo would have to be it. Just leave it to an acoustic guitar and the great singing voice of David Coverdale to keep you tied to your speakers all through the 10 songs. This record is even better than a Whitesnake Best Of. Only the greatest creations are to be found on this CD. You can't possibly ever be sorry to get your hands on it. There isn't a human being on the face of this planet who hasn't heard "Soldier Of Fortune", the great Deep Purple classic, before. Also Whitesnake big hits like "The Deeper The Love", "Is This Love", and the ever popular "Here I Go Again" are pretty popular with the crowds. I don't really know why, but the truth is, that I liked these songs much more in their simple, acoustic form than the actual studio-shape I've became so used to. No delay effects or other studio toys used (except for a compression maybe), and still you feel like these songs are as powerful as they have never been before. Still can't figure out how this can be... it's so simple and yet so good. I realize this kind of music might not appeal to the readers we usually try to reach, because there isn't a distorted note on the range of a thousand km from this stuff, but I just loved it so much, that I had to write about it. I usually grade music according to the way it affects me emmotionally and, although I wouldn't grade a Best Of with these songs above 8.5, I had to give this one full credit. It couldn't have been done much better than this. Did I mention how much i loved it?
