REVIEW: Widow - Nightlife Cruz Del Sur, 2007
7.5/10
Widow - Nightlife - cover art Widow's third studio album Nightlife is definitely a blast from the past with a taste of modern metal and thrash. These guys have been around and recording since 2000, trying to tell their stories and experiences. It's hard to explain their sound, but they have an 80's feel (Iron Maiden,Judas Priest, Warlord, etc.) and add their own Widow flare into the mix. Most songs are heavy with metal riffs and fast drumming, but are still able to have melodic choruses and verses.

The vocalist, John Wooten, takes on an 80's melodic singing style (reminding me of Scorpions and Maiden), while their lead guitarist Chris Bennet takes care of all the metal screaming within the album. Widow has an interesting sound that isn't around too much right now, they're a clash of old school metal and new school metal, which is displayed perfectly in Nightlife. The songs "Beware of the Night" and "Beauty Queen" are great examples of that new and old metal mash-up, while "Cult of Life" takes on a slower feel and shows their diversity.

All in all, Widow's third album Nightlife really shows their 80's roots while tossing some metal and thrash in there, making it that much better. Closing the album with covers of Van Halen's "Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love" and Kiss's "I Stole Your Love," I'd say give Widow a listen.
