Will 'O' Wisp is a band from Rapallo, Italy, that was
formed in late 1992. In 1994 they recorded their first demo "Nocturnal
Whispers" with the help from Tommy Talamanca of the well-known Italian band
Sadist. This demo was very well received and even chosen as "demo of the
month" in Metal Hammer. A record contract was signed with Pick Up Records and
they released their debut album "Enchiridion". Now they are back with their
follow-up which is simply entitled "Unseen". Just like the first album this
is a concept album but while "Enchiridion" was based on ancient Egyptian
religion this one concentrates on the old divine entities from the Sumerian
religion. This is a band that finds inspiration from bands as diverse as
Coroner, Voivod, Cynic and Pink Floyd and you can easily tell by listening to
this album that they do not want to hide within the confines of one single
genre. In general you can say that their music is more built on atmosphere
than heaviness which will surely appeal to many fans of gothic music of
different kinds. There are definitely a lot of metal influences as well and
especially on the second track you can notice a little bit of thrash metal
riffing. The vocals are both male and female but always clean and of varying
quality. The music of Will 'O' Wisp is always psychedelic and sounds a
little like Cynic and Atheist mixed with Pink Floyd. I like the experimental
touch and the atmosphere they have been able to create but the album lacks
that little extra and the male vocals are unfortunately sometimes rather weak.
Stand-out tracks: "Through The Well" (some wonderfully weird vocals
there!).
