REVIEW: Windfall - Infector Sleaszy Rider Records, 2005
9.5/10
Windfall - Infector - cover art Windfall is a Greek band, but after hearing “Infector,” you’d think they hailed from Sweden. Their third release brings to mind albums by Gothenburg bands such as Dark Tranquility’s “Character” and Arch Enemy’s “Wages of Sin.” The “melodic death metal” thing has been done many times over, but Windfall comes across fresh. Why? Because they play it extremely well! The bass and drums lay a perfect foundation, almost bludgeoning the listener. The guitars are attention-grabbing and tuneful, while the keyboards add atmosphere and even take center stage once in awhile. And even though there is plenty of melody, there are no pretentious, experimental guitar or keyboard solos to bore you. There is no doubt that this is an energetic, aggressive, and engaging death metal album. Of course, one of the most recognizable elements of death metal is the vocal style, and once again, Windfall delivers. Papavasiliou possesses an intimidating growl, and his voice never once breaks. I could go on and on heaping praise on this album, but nothing I could say would convince you quite like listening for yourself would. If you are a fan of metal with artful brutality, “Infector” will surely not disappoint.
