REVIEW: Windir - Likferd Head Not Found, 2003
7.5/10
Windir - Likferd - cover art The Norwegian band Windir was formed in 1994 as a one-man project by Valfar. After recording a couple of demos and several albums he has now teamed up with his friends and members of the local band Ulcus (formerly known as Ulcus Molle). "Likferd" is the band's fourth full-length album and will certainly appeal to fans of Mithotyn, Einherjer and other similar bands who have adopted the mixture of atmospheric folk music and black metal generally labelled as "viking metal". The music is majestic and epic but not as technically weird as Einherjer, the vocals consist of both black metal style and clean male choir-like ones. There is one thing in particular that separates the music of Windir from the bands I have mentioned. In some of the songs there are thrash metal riffs that reminds me of older Testament and that is something you are not used to hear from a band like Windir. The music is well performed, the song material is very nice, the vocals are satisfactory and the production is great as the album was recorded at the Akkerhaugen Lydstudio (Myrkskog, Emperor, Zyklon...). Even though Vafar has been running this band for a decade soon this is my first encounter with them but it was a very pleasant one. This is definitely not for those of you who believe that black metal should be under-produced and raw but if you like atmospheric, melodic and epic extreme music then I suggest you check out this album. Stand-out tracks: "Despot", "Blodssvik", "Dauden".
