Jari Mäenpää left the Finnish melodic death metal act Ensiferum early this year. The reason was basically that there was not enough time for everything in his life and he had signed a record deal and booked a studio already last year to record the debut album of his solo project Wintersun. This is the result of many years of song writing which he has been doing on the side of Ensiferum as he was never the main songwriter in that band. In his solo project he can do whatever he wants and now the world will be able to enjoy his first official release. Jari himself handles vocals, guitars, bass and programming while he has engaged drummer Kai Hahto from the grind / death band Rotten Sound to abuse the skins. The self-titled debut album is musically incredibly rich. The main foundation is rooted in the same melodic death metal tradition as Ensiferum but here Jari is able to put his own personal touch on the recording. The vocals vary from clean vocals through viking-esque choruses to brutal screams and this variety makes a wide range of emotions felt throughout the music. Further emotions are transferred by the traditional melancholic Finnish melodies which seem to be deeply rooted in every Finnish metal musician today. The element of melancholy reminds a lot of the early Amorphis sound. There are both faster, more aggressive songs where a scent of power metal-ish death metal á la Children Of Bodom comes to life, but also slower, epic adventures where Jari lets his creative veins flow freely. It is the variety and the musical richness that makes this album a goldmine for lovers of Nordic metal in general. From speed metal outbursts to mid-tempo relaxation, the whole spectrum is covered and Wintersun is a band whose concept will be appreciated by fans of several different genres.
