This is the second release from the German one man black metal act Winterthrone. Awaiting a full-length recording this three track EP is being released by the small German label Nordstorm Productions. Once again we start off with a pompous intro, this time more direct and shorter than the last time though. The first real track "Nails Of Ice" shows that Winterthrone has taken a step forward in its development. This is more intense and extreme than anything presented on the first demo from the band. The vocals, which I found rather annoying before, have luckily also been improved. Still violent and still black, Winterthrone explore new environments while still maintaining the strong personal character established with their demo. The Emperor vibe is evident on this recording as well but now a more prominent harsh industrial edge has been added. Perhaps the current sound of Winterthrone could be described as a mix of Emperor, Marduk, Carpathian Forest, Dimmu Borgir and Tharen's industrial darkwave project Dominion III. The sound is great, the song writing better and I can not find one single aspect where Winterthrone has not improved this time. Symphonic and aggressive to the point of agonizing. One of the most promising bands of the younger generation and we will definitely see a lot more from this German band in the near future as a full-length album is being worked on. I only hope that one of the bigger metal labels sees the potential that lies herein. Needless to say this 7" EP has already been sold out from the label.
