When someone mentions the phrase "one man black metal band" I always raise my skeptical eye. To the cynical this means that this individual is either too bad of a musician to be accepted into a regular band or he is simply not capable of functioning around other human beings. To be honest most one-man projects tend to disappoint me but this German act has some interesting ideas to present to the world. After a very pompous and majestic intro the beast is let loose in the title track "The Burning Skies". Winterthrone perform violent and symphonic black metal which reminds me slightly of early Emperor, albeit a little bit more primitive. There is a bit of an industrial touch to the music which is the current trend in modern black metal. Here it is not as prominent as with many other bands though. "The Burning Skies" is a rather complex, advanced and professionally produced recording which makes if hard to believe that there is one single person behind it all. The lyrics are impossible to interpret from listening to the music and I personally find the vocals on the verge to annoying. That is the way they are meant to sound and I am sure that others will carry a different opinion. No song really sticks to your mind after having listened to this demo EP and perhaps that's the downside of it. Winterthrone is still a worthy addition to the modern black metal scene and have gotten off to a good start.
