“Iron League” begins with a thrashy guitar sequence quite in the vein of Slayer´s “Hell Awaits”. Then comes a succession of rhythms impregnated with thrashy hooks in the vein of the bands every metalhead will instantly recognize: Sodom, Kreator, etc. A clear declaration of their musical mottos and influences, definitely! Witchburner aren´t newcomers to this world since they started stumbling in the scene in 1992. In all these years several splits and EPs and four full-length albums have seen the dark light. After my short depiction it´s evident there is no mystery at all about these guys´ music, nor that´s their intention at all. Pure thrash with speed metal leanings in the vein of the aforementioned bands, what else do you need? They´re just what you hear. Clearly inspired by Teutonic thrash myths and incorporating elements from the US acts, Witchburner have the classic fast passages, groovy mid tempos, grinding chugga-chugga guitars, melodies far from complexity and straight between the eyes, barking vocals... Well, vocals are a bit too shrieky, until the point from time to time some verses end in ridiculous tiny screams -almost moans- with strange tonal changes. “Fighting Force” is a good proof of this, it really can be disturbing to the ears! Those licks are awful. Yes, the vocals deliver the standard aggressive goods with average results though things like that make me not quite so fond of the vocal work in general. The music itself is rather correct and the good production makes the whole thing competent. If your Sodom and Destruction collection is burnt after millions of listenings and you still crave for more and more thrash shots, bands like Witchburner will make your day without a doubt. The originators of the evil sound can´t be matched in their glory but the disciples hold the banner high and still go against all circumstances and trends.
