Metal is not exactly what Denmark is most known for, if you don't count in Mercyful Fate / King Diamond, but during the past five years more and more Danish bands have moved into the world's eyes. One of the most important ones is Withering Surface who have now joined many Scandinavian friends at the Italian label Scarlet Records for the release of their fourth full-length album "Force The Pace". For Japanese fans the album will be released through King Records with two bonus tracks. What is it about Japan and bonus tracks anyway, why do they need these songs but the rest of the world doesn't? The last album from the band - "Walking On Phantom Ice" - was a crisp melodic death metal release. It was competently done but there was something missing in order for the band to move forward. That little something they seem to have found on the road to a new record deal because "Force The Pace" definitely contains the best material from the Danish guys to this date. The production is massive thanks to Tue Madsen who has worked with Mnemic and The Haunted before and the music has been taken to the next level with more modern song writing in the vein of In Flames, Darkane and Soilwork, without forgetting about their past to add their own personal touch to it. The riffing is razor sharp and the vocals are simply amazing. Michael H. Andersen beat the hell out of most vocalists this genre has to present today and if there is one Danish metal band who is going to make it big it is Withering Surface. This is the breath of fresh air that the modern death / thrash metal scene is in so much need of today. Not an essential masterpiece but definitely worth the money if this genre is of particular interest to you.
