REVIEW: Within Tears - Moments Of Life Chapter 1 Self-financed, 2001
7/10
Within Tears - Moments Of Life Chapter 1 - cover art Within Tears is a band from Brooklyn, New York, USA, who (apart from admiring my website...) play slow, melancholic doom metal. The band only consists of two members who earlier used to play in a demo band called Subjection who played shows with renowned acts like Deicide, Carcass, Type O Negative and Candiria. As a doom metal band you must have: 1) a male growler with a monstrous voice and Within Tears do; 2) painfully slow riffs, Within Tears do; 3) longer than average songs, Within Tears do; 4) emotional songs, preferably also enhanced with the use of piano, violins or something else and Within Tears has this also. Apart from actually having the necessary elements this is band who also does the whole thing very well. You might expect the sound quality to not be so good since they have financed the recordings of this debut album themselves but it sounds very good indeed. The only thing that doesn´t sound too good is the drum machine. Most of the vocals are of the growling kind but there are also some clean male vocals similar to those of My Dying Bride. This album also contains some of the most beautifully serene female vocals I´ve ever heard (done by Barbara Nolan) and this is something the band should develop further. A good first effort from an ambitious band that are currently already working on new material and looking for additional touring members. The cd can be purchased for $7.50 through the band's website at http://withintears.virtualave.net/ or through Amazon.com.
